AAMR DEFINITION ON MENTAL RETARDATION
Metal Retardation refers to substantial limitation in present functioning. It is characterized by significant sub-average intellectual functioning, existing concurrently with related limitations in two or more of the following applicable adaptive skill areas: communication, self-care, home living, social skills, community use self-direction, health and safety, functional academics, leisure and work, and if mental retardation manifest before the age of 18 years.
These are areas which are considered when making an assessment.

II. Assessment of strengths and weakness and
III. Identification of the intensity of supports
The IQ is considered, skills the person has and the support they have had or changes that maybe made if support is given.
Four Dimensional areas when looking a mental retardation.
A. Intellectual function - IQ 70-75, Limitations in two or more adaptive skill areas, and onset o f MR before age 18.
B. Psycho/emotional - psychological and emotional and social strengths and needs of the individual.
C. Physical Health and the etiology of Mental Retardation.
D. Environmental Consideration - an individual's current and optimal environment in terms of living, working, and education.
Intensities of Mental Retardation
I. Intermittent - support is given on an as needed basis.
II. Limited - regular basis for a short period of time.
III. Extensive - on-going; daily and not time limited
IV. Pervasive - constant; and high intensity and intrusive support.
